Axiote
$9.00 – $25.00The Annatto tree is often referred to as the Lipstick Tree as it is used to color many cosmetics including lipstick. Native to the rain forests of the Yucatan and Belize, the spice is known throughout Central America by its Nahuatl name, Axiote. Blended with other spices and herbs, and ground into a paste, axiote is a mainstay of Yucatecan cuisine, and is used to season primarily chicken, but is also used on fish, lobster, and pork (achiote paste is marketed throughout Central America as “recado rojo”). In India, Hindu women use it to make the mark on their foreheads.
With a distinctive mildly bitter, earthy flavor, the annatto seed is most commonly used in Western culture as a food coloring for cheese, margarine, butter, rice, and smoked fish. We use it as a primary ingredient for our Belizean-inspired Axiote rub for chicken and fish.

This blend is a game changer for me. I have been battling sweet cravings and was just amazed at what this little bottle of goodness did to dress up my roasted sweet potatoes and roasted apples slices …with no added sugar. I cannot wait to discover more uses.

I really wanted to love this spice however it’s a star anise forward blend. I find it too strong. I’m going to try the apple pie spice instead. I would return this one if I could. But if you love star anise, then this blend is for you.

Yes, our Pumpkin Pie Spice does include Star Anise, which makes it a little different than most Pumpkin Pie Spices. It has a very strong following; I’m sorry that you didn’t like it. Our Apple Pie Spice has Vanilla as a key ingredient. I hope it’s more to your liking.

One of my favorite “go to’s” for pancakes, waffles, cookies, chili & stews, but most of all, I love it on my froth in my morning coffee! It just warms my soul!
