Rooibos, Red

In 18th century South Africa, Green Rooibos was harvested in the mountains & brought home on donkeys. The Dutch fermented it in the style of Chinese black teas, in order to use it as a substitute for the expensive to import beverage. Red Rooibos was first created with fermentation in 1904. No caffeine ~ No flavors added. Just the fermented flavor of the South African mountains.

A Rose is a Rose. Roses & other flowers have been used as flavorings for millennia across many cultures. In teas and tisanes, roses have long been considered a cure-all. This history, along with its delicate floral flavor and lovely color, made it particularly popular during the Victorian era.

A most tasty and satisfying tea! I admit, I bought it for the name (I collect Sherlockian teas), but now I drink it for pleasure and will certainly order more. This is really well balanced, with a surprising depth. Even brewed strong it doesn’t get bitter, and stands up well to milk. The flavour profile is complex and pleasing–no standout notes but, instead, smooth and refreshing from first to last. After trying dozens of “novel-teas,” it’s lovely to finally have a go-to Sherlockian tea. (And FWIW it also works day-old and iced.)
